Jumping off the refrigerator into my Dad's arms...

Today, the neighbors would probably be calling Social Services to report child abuse but when we were little, my Dad would stand my sister, brother and me on the top of the refrigerator (one at a time, of course) and coax us into "jumping" about a foot or so into his waiting arms.

I have no clue how or when he came up with this "fun thing to do" or even if I liked it, but one thing is certain, these many years later, my sister, brother and I all still remember doing it.

Funny, the things we remember about our childhood.

Fathers teach us many things (moms do too, of course :) ) but there is no way I would have had such a wonderful run in this promotional products industry had it not been for my Dad's faith and support.

We started a catalog marketing business together in the early 80's, Nelson Marketing, which struggled mightily in the beginning and it was my Dad who then, while in his mid-60's, mortgaged his fully-paid-for home to get money to keep the promo business going.

But we did well and later sold the business that is today 4imprint, now employing nearly 400 people. Just an amazing run.

Many of the business lessons I use today I learned from my Dad... be honest in all your dealings, even if it costs you to do so... put your staff first (if they aren't looked after, how can they look after your customers?)... and above all, treat others as you want to be treated.

This will be my first Father's Day without my Dad and I miss him dearly but we had a terrific run. I am indeed one of the lucky. I hope you are too.
