The Columbia County Humane Society
The Columbia County Humane Society
Portage, WI

The Columbia County Humane Society started in 1925 in response to growing community need to care for unwanted and abandoned animals. Over the years, they have saved the lives of countless animals through immediate care and treatment, and ultimately adoption. Their new shelter opened in 1998 to accommodate the increasing number of animals needing care and to provide increased services to the community, allowing the Society to continue its humanitarian work well into the 21st century. CCHS takes pride in the fact that they do not euthanize animals for space. They also do not euthanize animals if they are not adopted within a certain length of time. All animals at their shelter are given every chance at adoption possible. To this end, they serve over 1100 animals a year.

Hungry Hearts Foundation
Hungry Hearts Foundation
Lake Stevens, WA

The Hungry Hearts Foundation is a nonprofit organization designed to help feed at risk, hungry school-aged children who are currently on the National School Lunch Program by providing them with supplemental food for the weekends and school holidays. Many students are getting enough to eat at school during the week through the National School Lunch Program, however, when they are home on the weekends there often is not enough food. Supplemental kid-friendly food items are packaged in nondescript bags that are distributed to students at school on Fridays. It is run by volunteers found through schools' PTAs/PTSAs and the community. Hungry Hearts currently serves 208 children each week.
