The mission of the Special Olympics is to provide year round training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic type sports for kids and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them the opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship.
Year round training is offered free of charge to over 38,000 children & adults in North Carolina. There are over 19 sports offered on the local level and 12 of these on the national level. Some examples include aquatics, basketball, bocce, bowling, cycling, golf, gymnastics, powerlifting, soccer, tennis and triathlon. This year, many of the Gold medal winners from NC will have the opportunity to compete at the 2014 USA Special Olympics Games in New Jersey.
The Special Olympics programs also offer public speaking training to help their members become global messengers, coaches or fulfill a leadership role. Screenings are offered free of charge at certain events, including vision or hearing tests, as well as assistance with the cost of glasses if needed, dental checkups, and other supplies such as tooth brushes, guards, etc.
The promotional products the Special Olympics group is looking for include gift packs for volunteers with custom T-shirts and disposable cameras as well as "Survival kits" for athletes or their guests, which include hats, sunscreen, water bottles and bug spray.
